A Domain Name is an identifier used to access a server computer hosting a website or any other service communicated via the internet. There are several levels of domain names such as top-level domains (TLDs) like .com, .net. and .org and country level domains are (ccTLDs) like .fr, .ca, .ro, co.uk, .asia and more.
The Domain Name System (DNS) was devised in the 1980s and was divided into two main groups of domains. The country code top-level domains (ccTLD) which are based on the two-character territory codes of country country abbreviations. In addition, a group of seven generic top-level domains (gTLD) which represented the categories of names and multi-organizations like .gov(ernment), .edu(cation), .com(mercial), .mil(itary), .org(anisations), .net(work), and .int(ernational).
Purpose for Domain Names
A Domain Names represents an Internet Protocol (IP) resources (e.g., 126.96.36.199) and domains names are used in replacement of these numerical values to serve as humanly memorable names for access that numerical internet address. In other words, domain names are used as host identifiers for internet resources such as websites (e.g. seolus.com). Domain names are also used as simple identification to indicate ownership or control.
- Top-level domain; a domain name that belong to the top-level domain group (e.g., seolus.com)
- Sub-domain; a label to the left of the domain that signifies a subdivision of the domain (e.g., blog.seolus.com)
Domain Name Administration
The Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) authorizes domain name registrars, to register and reassigned or in other words sell and resell the right of use of domain names. ICANN is charged with overseeing the name and number systems of the internet. Registrars typically charge an annual fee for the service of delegating domain names to users. This transaction is termed as a sale or lease of the domain name, and the registrant who is also referred as the “domain holder” is considered the “owner”, but legal relationship is actually associated with the transaction, only the exclusive right to use the domain name.
